What do you want to do when you grow up?
Students at Swegle Elementary have been thinking about that a lot this week. That’s because this was Swegle’s “College and Career Week.”
Swegle students had fun all week with “theme days” focusing on careers. Kids from kindergarten through fifth grade participated.
For example, students dressed as people they admire one day, dressed in their favorite college’s gear the next day and dressed in clothes associated with careers they’d like to do the day after that.
Today’s theme was “Your Future Is Bright,” so everyone was encouraged to wear bright clothing.
Jerry Freeman with the Lewis Media Group demonstrated drones during an all-school assembly Friday morning. Drones are used to take aerial photography and are an example of an exciting future career in technology.
Today began with a K-5 all-school assembly in the gym, where professional photographer demonstrated drone technology.
Carolyn McCallister, RN, talks with fifth-graders about her journey to become a registered nurse. She is the Nursing Supervisor of Orientation and Training with the Salem Clinic.
After that, fourth- and fifth-graders heard presentations from professionals including a lawyer, a photographer, a pilot, a police officer, fire fighters, a nurse, a musician and a cosmetologist. The students got to choose which speakers they wanted to hear, and also got to ask them questions.

In order to achieve their dreams of having a great career, students also heard from representatives with Chemeketa Community College, Western Oregon University and our own Career and Technical Education Center.
Swegle School Counselor Lisa Drilling and Assistant Principal Keith Broyles at today’s “My Future is Bright” College and Career Day. They both got into the spirit of today’s theme by wearing vivid colors.
“College and Career week at Swegle was a wonderful time to celebrate many of our local colleges, universities and professionals,” said School Counselor Lisa Drilling.
“A giant thank you to the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and Chris Phipps, who partnered with me to coordinate this phenomenal event. Students enjoyed learning about a variety of professions. And a big thank you to the Swegle Parent Club who also contributed their time and help to make this a fun learning event for all of Swegle.”
